It’s always good news when an application comes along that meets a need that you have tried to solve with duct tape and string. So, when a few days ago, I came across mmhmm, an application released by Evernote’s former CEO Phil Libin, designed to take your video conferencing to the next level, I was immediately interested, and signed up to try it out. Besides, I think the name is really good :-)

What does mmhmm do? The app overlaps with the video conferencing systems many of us have installed during the lockdown, such as Zoom, Google Meet and others, and that allows you to define spaces on the screen you are sending, from simple virtual backgrounds, to presentations, browser windows, or your mobile screen. In addition to sharing, for example, a presentation in the well-known over-the-shoulder format common to TV news, you can manage the size of your image, so that it does not overlap with your presentation or change your degree of transparency by a curious effect but that works. It also offers possibilities for group work, presentations between several people.

All this can be done against the typical virtual background, which prevents distractions and offers some privacy. I use the virtual background feature as a way of projecting my presentations to avoid screen sharing, which I’ve always found very unattractive: instead, I export my presentation in image format, number those images in the sequence I want, and then import them into Zoom as virtual backgrounds, which allows me to change the background while I speak while providing a much more professional result, at least for the type of presentations I use, rather than the screen sharing feature.

An application that allows easy access to these kinds of functions and with much more control over the result is extremely attractive, because it incorporates a good part of the possibilities that can be obtained with more sophisticated and more complex applications such as OBS and similar. Obviously, these are functions that, sooner or later, we will end up seeing implemented better or worse in most other video conferencing tools, which will force mmhmm to continue improving its features to stay ahead of the pack. So far, Sequoia Capital has invested $4.5 million, and with Libin’s connections in Silicon Valley, he won’t have too many problems attracting more money.
