After an almost 30-year absence, Apple is going to return to the CES technology show. But don’t expect the company to unveil a new product.
According to an official CES schedule, Apple is slated to participate in an industry panel on how major companies are trying to address the growing demand for privacy. Apple’s senior director Jane Horvath will be joining FTC commissioner Rebecca Slaughter and Facebook’s chief privacy officer Erin Egan, among others, to discuss the topic.
The last time Apple officially appeared at CES was all the way back in 1992 when the event had a summer show in Chicago. Apple’s then CEO John Scully appeared on stage to introduce the Newton, a personal digital assistant.
Since then, Cupertino has been absent as an official exhibitor at CES. The company’s rivals, meanwhile, have used the annual tech show as a way to preview and promote their latest gadgets and technologies. But during this past January’s CES show, Apple signaled it was ready to reassert the company’s presence. It did this by buying up a giant advertisement outside the show in Las Vegas that talked up the company’s stance on privacy. “What happens on your iPhone, stays on your iPhone,” read the ad, which was displayed not far from Google’s official booth at the event.
Apple is now increasingly using the company’s commitment to digital privacy as a way to stand out from other tech vendors, and sell iPhones to consumers. At the same time, company CEO Tim Cook has become a vocal supporter of the US passing a federal digital privacy law to stop internet companies from mining people’s personal data. So we expect Apple to hammer the same points during the upcoming panel discussion at CES 2020, which will be held next month in Las Vegas from January 7 to January 10th.
That all said, the company’s record on protecting users hasn’t been spotless. Back in 2017, Apple removed numerous censorship-evading VPN apps from the iOS app store in China on pressure from Chinese authorities. This past September, Apple also received criticism for the company’s response to how the Chinese government may have spied on thousands of Uighur Muslims through a flaw in iOS.
