    This year, after six fantastic years as a primary school teacher in London, I took the opportunity to reevaluate my life and career and take the first steps towards career-change. Months of soul-searching eventually led me to web development and to enrolling on Le Wagon’s intensive nine-week coding bootcamp. Why Le Wagon? Well, as the world’s #1 rated bootcamp there were plenty of reasons to choose them over their rivals. As for the answer to ‘why web development?’, I found this a little trickier to articulate.

    At first, the leap from standing in front of a class of 8-year-olds to sitting in front of a screen-full of code seemed intangible, and I worried about what transferable skills I could bring to my potential new career. Teaching is an amazing profession and I will always be proud of my time as a teacher. It’s still very much a part of my life and I want to hold on to those skills throughout the rest of my career, whatever that may bring.

    I needn’t have worried; as soon as the bootcamp started I knew I had made the right decision. The logic clicked, concepts fell into place and I fell in love with the process of creating, testing, debugging, and ultimately making cool things that work. So what are the key takeaways for me as an ex teacher embarking on this journey, and why should other teachers looking at a career change consider coding?

    The conceptual stuff

    When asked about my previous coding experience prior to starting the course at Le Wagon, I couldn’t point to much more than a distant youth messing around with HTML in the days of Geocities (anyone remember?). However, I almost missed something blindingly obvious: I have been teaching coding for the past six years!

    In line with the National Curriculum, 7-year-olds need to learn about algorithms and create and debug simple programs, and although this might seem light-years away from what needs to be learnt to become an adult full-stack developer, the basic concepts remain the same. The first few coding lessons that a Year 1 child will take part in will generally involve no tech at all: for the first lesson with my Year 1 class, I took them out into the playground, paired them up and asked them to give each other clear instructions (“walk forward three paces”, “turn left”). After all, coding is really just ‘giving computers instructions’. Once children get the basic concepts of what they are doing, they are then able to apply this to creating games, programming robots and all the other cool stuff that kids get to do with coding these days.

    This approach to understanding key concepts is mirrored in Le Wagon’s own teaching style and really helped me on my bootcamp journey. The same skills that helped me introduce coding to young children; using relatable analogies and ‘non-tech’ thinking, also helped me to see the bigger picture whenever I got stuck or bogged-down in a particular concept.

    As a teacher I have always felt that communication was a strength; from forming constructive dialogues with pupils and fellow teachers, to public speaking in front of the classroom or assembly hall, and although the stereotype of the lone, anti-social coder is still pretty pervasive in popular culture, the reality couldn’t be further from the truth. From collaborating during whole-class live-code sessions, to tackling daily challenges with a partner, to the final group project; teamwork and communication is a key component of the Le Wagon journey, and a key skill for anyone looking to participate in a modern web development environment. The sheer amount of knowledge crammed into a 9-week course simply would not be possible to digest alone, without the help of Le Wagon’s dedicated teachers, teaching assistants and classmates, all with new and interesting insights, perspectives and ideas.

    It’s a key requirement of all teachers to make sure their lessons and activities are tailored to all pupils, regardless of any barrier to learning that may exist, be that special educational needs, language needs or any number of other reasons. Within this context there’s an oft-quoted saying among educators: “Good SEN (special educational needs) teaching is good teaching”, or, create something that is accessible to all and those features will benefit everyone. I strongly feel that the same applies to web development.

    Accessibility in web design incorporates many considerations, from making sure websites and apps are usable on all devices, to ensuring that elements make sense to users with visual impairments using screen-readers. Throughout the web development learning journey, when cool new features become possible and creative ideas take shape, it’s often easy to overlook these principles. However, the bottom line is this: if your app doesn’t work for a user, then it’s failed at the first hurdle. As a teacher in web development I’ve come to realise that I am in a unique position to see these potential user barriers, and although the latest features and styles can really enhance your project, these can’t come at the expense of functionality and usability. If this puts me into the category of ‘boring’ developer, then so be it!

    Throughout this journey I have discovered many transferable skills that I perhaps didn’t realise I had, and that will stay with me as I embark on my new tech career, whether I choose to stay close to the education sector or not. Of course Le Wagon have helped me immensely to nurture and develop these skills as well as learn new ones. My advice to other teachers looking to change careers would be to definitely consider web development and coding, and although any learning journey takes time, effort and commitment, you’re probably already more suited to it than you realise!
