When I arrived at Quantum Talent in September 2019, although I was excited about the idea of working at Quantum, I was a little nervous. I didn’t know too much about Startups since I’d worked all of my career in established companies, and start working as Head of Technology excited me, but at the same time, it worried me. My experience was solving things in a business context with more resources, with many people or partners who help you get things done when you get stuck with something, but doing it in a Startup is a different challenge.

Projects in the Enterprise world are by nature more expensive; when you have to change something into production, you have to meet a series of requirements and go through a series of steps in the process, some of them are manual, and there are many people/roles involved. All this will inevitably make the process take a little longer, which is fine since they have the financial backing to linger a bit without moving the business’s needle that much.

In Startups, on the other hand, it is a constant struggle to evolve the product; adding features of creative ideas is what can make the difference between you keep moving forward and tempt to one day be a unicorn or stay on the road.

Therefore, the challenge is to deliver value as quickly as possible, with a stable cadence, and that does not mean that we’re going to do it fast but without quality. On the contrary, we need high quality because we have fewer resources to solve issues and provide technical support.

Our culture encourages the right balance between personal life and teamwork to keep the burnout low. Our products have to evolve quickly but are stable and have quality simultaneously, helping the business meet its goals, escalate, and grow; meanwhile, the team has enough time for their own business.

Resources are scarce in a Startup, but that is not bad since it allows the team to find creative ways to solve problems. For example, have optimal algorithms, work with open source, have cloud infrastructure, have a cloud-native architecture by default, automate everything, and mainly have a continuous improvement and quality mindset.

To make the continuous delivery of value and quality sustainable over time, it is undoubtedly necessary to achieve more efficient and effective ways of developing and deploying our software products; in other words, we need to build high-performance teams.

My favorite definition of high-performance teams is “A high-performance team is one that exceeds all reasonable expectations and produces extraordinary results.”

There is a lot of literature on high-performance teams and what makes them high-performant. In our case, we use the State of DevOps that DORA publishes every year and which is detailed in the book Accelerate, by Gene Kim, Nicole Folsgreen, and Jez Humble.

For six consecutive years, they have developed and validated four key metrics that measure the effectiveness of the development process; they summarized these metrics in metrics that measure throughput and stability.

Metrics that measure throughput are the Lead Time, which is the time in a code change since the commit until the release of the change and Deployment Frequency.

The metrics that measure stability are the Time to Restore, which is the time since detecting a user impacting incident until having it remediated, and the Change Failure Rate, which measures the percentage of changes in production you have had a problem and needed a fix or rollback.

DORA has created a benchmarking that divides teams into elite, high, medium, and low-performance. These four metrics have verified it for six consecutive years, with more than 31,000 professionals working in different software teams in companies of all sizes worldwide.

Based on this study, we compare ourselves with the best in the world in these metrics (high performance and elite) and we are continually trying new things to improve ourselves.
