It’s no secret that wearable tech has gained traction over the past years. Its buyers have turned devices like the Apple Watch into a staple that everyday tech is no longer just your computer and phone. But so far, wearing certain devices has been more of a brand statement than a health tracker.

In theory, these devices can give us major health indicators that, in turn, could help us improve the whole health sector by monitoring or even preventing diseases. In reality, their potential is yet to be matched.

Three brands are trying to change that.

(Whoop)

If you research Nike’s brand positioning over the years, you can find a similarity here. One thing that both professional athletes and regular everyday folks can purchase is a pair of Nike shoes. But now, it’s also the Whoop band.

Whoop started as a promising performance tracker, but for many, it didn’t deserve a spot on the wearables’ industry podium. That quickly changed once we understood the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was the time for health tech companies to find a way to spot first symptom signals or reduce the quick spreading. Whoop’s features, including indicating early respiratory issues and heart rate variability, became precious data at the right time.

But Whoop isn’t a Covid-only wearable. Their focus is on providing:

“daily personalized fitness, sleep, and recovery data…in real time.”

And they continue to do so by partnering with the best athletes in the world.

Once a premium service created primarily for the richest and fittest, the performance wristband now relies on a more affordable membership model. With that, it hopes to one day become as essential a piece of tech as Nike shoes are for running.

Whooop functions as not only a brand statement but also as an incredible value provider. Their subscription community now amasses thousands of everyday users and continues to grow in a segment before seen as too exclusive.

(Apple’s Watch Series)

I don’t need to give you the brand back story.

But Apple’s latest moves show a different notion of health, entirely.

In an attempt to join the health tech club once again, Apple just released its new device, the Watch Series 6. Following the race to spot early Coronavirus symptoms, Apple’s latest device now provides blood oxygen detection.

I’m surprised Apple hadn’t done this before, but I would be out of my place to assume the technology giant doesn’t know what they are doing.

For Apple, the opportunity to conquer this market is even more enormous. In fact, its dominant position in the wearable market already proves to be a head start, as their recent partnership with Singapore shows.

In a first-of-its-kind partnership (similar to what’s seen in companies that try to boost health indicators and morale), Singaporeans now have $280 extra reasons to thank Apple if they exercise often.

Name technology brands tend to get even larger as they expand into different segments and as we fall into their network of products, interacting with one major software hub.

Apple One is the latest example of that. Also, this is a genius play for Apple considering their position.

    Apple One

Besides, the Apple Watch is an actual watch and phone device now, complementing their always improving health features.

(Oura Ring)

Although not a watch, Oura has become another staple on early indicators of Covid-19 symptoms and sickness overall.

Fostering partnerships with major sports leagues such as the NBA and the WNBA, NASCAR, and most recently, the UFC, it’s become the official health-tracking partner of sports.

Showing this tremendous growth over the past months, Oura is best known for its sleep tracking feature and simple design. As a ring, it doesn’t compete for wrist space. And guess what? We have more fingers than wrists.

But that’s not the reason why it’s also moving the industry. With its success as one of the earliest Covid-19 symptoms detectives, the wearable has boasted about its accuracy levels in both respiratory rates and heart rate variability.

Not to get too technical, these features help us understand our bodies in a way that we never have before.

Not amused? Imagine your body spoke in French, and the Oura Ring translated it better than your cousin from Quebec. It’s that good.

It’s no doubt that the Oura is here to stay as one of the parallels with healthcare. But can it complement it?

(Technology overall)

Be it a ring or a watch, we need to focus on the value the wearables currently bring to the table. And telling the time here isn’t the priority.

These are technology providers, after all, and even the most basic technology often carries excellent information. Among so many brands, we just need to know how to use them.

And of course, mentioning these three brands doesn’t mean we are ignoring their competitors–among other great ones, the now Google-owned Fitbit.

“With Google’s resources and global platform, Fitbit will be able to accelerate innovation in the wearables category, scale faster, and make health even more accessible to everyone,” — James Park, Fitbit’s co-founder and CEO.

Although Fitbit has increased its focus on health indicators, this week’s news on Apple Watch improvements make health indicators even more necessary for any wearable out there.

For its competitors to remain attractive, they will need more than just steps and calories.

What some of these brands can provide today is a value that is unmatched elsewhere.

While doctors tend to analyze symptoms and fight them as they come, a wearable can provide real-time, long term results in how we have felt over weeks.

Once wearables’ data becomes a complementary piece of healthcare, the possibilities become endless.

(Enough with the guessing.)

Health indicators are only exact when you were in a doctor’s office or hospital. With wearables, this is different.

The integration with hospitals is inevitable. Many have deemed Google and Apple as the ones who can revolutionize healthcare as it exists today, so why not do that on a public scale? Quicker diagnosis, better understanding, more accurate recommendations.

We have recently faced newer fears and understand that health is more important than ever. As Covid-19 was the first pandemic in a technology-filled world, collecting health data is, without a doubt, one of the best ways to prevent the next outbreaks.

Once we have truly mastered these devices’ features, we essentially have a health expert in our wrists at all times.

We are seeing a significant revolution in how we use this technology for our health and how we communicate with our bodies.

Our bodies are telling us that we are tired, sick, or ready for more. Now the translators we didn’t know we needed are here to stay.

There will come a day when wearables will not only be seen as health trackers but also as a necessity for all individuals in a functioning society–much like phones are today.
